CHAPTER ONE
BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY
Introduction
Public administration since inception, both in textbook, curriculum and practices, largely overlooked minorities and dismissed contribution that reflected women’s experience. This was evidenced in the early history of Nigeria where government declared one half salaries for women in public service on the same job that a man would be paid to perform, until an equality law was enacted in 1963.1 This study seeks to examine the impact of Nigerian women in public service, with reference to Abike Dabiri. The exclusion of women from public service in Nigeria can be traced back to the colonial time. As a result of colonization, the resurgence of women’s movements demanding greater public service in Nigeria started late. According to the International Parliamentary Union (IPU), women living in Northern Nigeria received suffrage as late as 1978.2 Nigeria even now has not created a legislative framework securing quotas for women in political party and national elections according to the International IDEA. The importance of active participation of women in public service in Nigeria cannot be over emphasized especially in relation to their preponderance in the population of the country.3 Abike Kafayat Oluwatoyin Dabiri-Erewa was born in 10th October 1962, she is a Nigerian politician and former member of the Nigeria Federal House of Representative representing and former member of the Nigeria Federal House of representing Ikorodu Constituency in Lagos State. She was the Chairman of the House Committee on Media and Publicity.4
. The study, however, is focused on their impact of public service in Nigeria with reference to Abike Dabiri. The study will be a viable source of information for future researchers on this subject and its likes.
