HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND GOVERNMENT RESPONSE IN EDO STATE; 2016-2024

CHAPTER ONE

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

Introduction

The scourge of human trafficking has been a persistent and multifaceted problem affecting communities globally for millennia. In Nigeria, particularly in Edo State, human trafficking has become a significant concern, with far-reaching consequences for individuals, communities, and the nation as a whole. This study seeks to investigate the historical context, underlying factors, and consequences of human trafficking in Edo State, from 2016 to 2024.1 Historically, human trafficking has been a pervasive problem in Nigeria, dating back to the transatlantic slave trade era. However, in recent years, the phenomenon has taken on a more complex and insidious form, with victims being trafficked within and outside the country for various purposes, including forced labor, prostitution, and organ harvesting.2

Edo State has been identified as a major hub for human trafficking in Nigeria. The state’s proximity to the coast and its location in the southern part of the country make it a convenient transit point for traffickers. Furthermore, the state’s high poverty rate, lack of education, and unemployment have created a fertile ground for traffickers to exploit vulnerable individuals. In response to the growing concern, the Edo State Government has taken steps to combat human trafficking. This study will examine the effectiveness of these efforts and provide recommendations for improving the state’s response to human trafficking.3

This study aims to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on human trafficking by providing an in-depth analysis of the phenomenon in Edo State, from 2016 to 2024. Specifically, the study will examine the causes and consequences of human trafficking in the state, as well as the efforts being made by government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community-based groups to combat the problem.4
